A Steam key is the standard way PC games are sold outside Steam itself. You activate the code against your account, the game joins your library permanently, and from that point it is indistinguishable from a copy bought on the store directly.
Same updates, same cloud saves, same achievements, same Workshop access. The only difference is where the code came from.
What is a Steam key?
It is a one-time activation code issued by the publisher and redeemed on a Steam account. Once activated the game is tied to that account for good. Keys cannot be reused or moved to a second account afterward.
This is ownership rather than access. A key does not depend on a subscription staying active, and the game stays in the library whether or not it is later delisted from the store.
What is in the catalog?
- New releases. Current titles, often available from launch day.
- Back catalog. Older games that rarely leave a wishlist until they are discounted.
- Indie titles. The part of the Steam catalog that is easiest to miss and usually the best value.
- Editions and bundles. Deluxe and complete versions that fold DLC into the base purchase.
For add-on content rather than whole games, see DLCs.
How to activate a Steam key
In the Steam client, open the Games menu and choose Activate a Product on Steam, accept the subscriber agreement, enter the key and confirm. In a browser, go to store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey and enter it there. Either way the title appears in the library immediately and can be downloaded straight away.
Activate on the account you actually play on. A key registered to the wrong account cannot be transferred, and Steam does not reverse activations.
Check the region before buying
Some Steam keys are global and others are restricted to a region, which Steam enforces at activation based on the account’s country. Where a restriction applies it is stated in the product title on this page. A restricted key activated from the wrong region will simply be rejected, so it is worth thirty seconds of checking.
Do Steam keys expire?
No. An unactivated key does not run out, and once activated the game stays in the library indefinitely. There is no need to redeem immediately if you are buying ahead of a birthday or holiday.
