Steam is the largest PC games storefront, and its defining feature is the account library. A game activated on a Steam account stays there permanently, downloadable on any machine that signs in, which is why a Steam key is worth more than a one-off download.

How activation works

A Steam key is entered once, under Games then Activate a Product on Steam in the client, or through the account page in a browser. The title is added to the library and can be installed and reinstalled without limit from then on.

Activation is permanent and tied to the account that redeems it. Steam does not allow a game to be moved between accounts afterwards, and it does not allow an activated key to be re-sold or re-used. Redeem on the account that will actually play.

What to check before activating

Region restrictions

Some Steam keys are restricted to a region and will refuse to activate on an account registered elsewhere. The region is stated in every product title on this page.

System requirements

Steam titles list minimum and recommended specifications, and older games sometimes carry compatibility caveats on modern systems. Requirements are shown on each product page.

Existing ownership

Steam will refuse a key for a title already in the library. Worth confirming before buying as a gift, since the key cannot be reassigned once activated.

Why buy a key rather than through the store

Keys are issued by publishers through distribution partners and activate identically to a store purchase. The library entry, achievements, cloud saves and multiplayer access are the same. The difference is where the key was bought, not what it grants.

Before you buy

Check the region and the system requirements on the listing, and confirm the title is not already owned on the account. None of these can be resolved after a key has been activated.
