Xbox Live, now branded as the Xbox network, is the account system that carries a player’s balance, library and subscriptions across Xbox consoles and Windows. It is the same Microsoft account in both places, which is what makes an Xbox code useful beyond the console itself.

How the Microsoft account ties it together

Balance added on a console is the same balance available on Windows, because both sign in to one Microsoft account. Credit does not have to be spent where it was added.

The account still has a region, and that region governs which store the balance can be spent in and which codes will redeem. Unlike some platforms, a Microsoft account region can sometimes be changed, but doing so with an existing balance can leave funds stranded in the previous region’s currency. Treat the region as fixed once there is money on the account.

Credit or a direct code?

Credit covers subscriptions

Game Pass and similar recurring plans draw from the account balance. Credit is the practical way to fund those without a card on file.

Game codes skip the price question

A direct code grants the title regardless of what it currently costs, which avoids topping up to cover a shortfall.

Balance does not expire

Once applied, credit sits on the account until it is used. There is no need to spend it in one go.

Redeeming on Xbox

Codes are redeemed from the Microsoft Store on console or Windows, or through a browser signed in to the account. Redemption is permanent and applies to the signed-in account.

On a shared console, confirm the active profile first. Credit and licences attach to that account and cannot be transferred later.

Check that the region shown in the product title matches the account. A mismatched code cannot be corrected after purchase.
