How Twitch regions work

Twitch operates regional storefronts, and a code is issued against one of them. A card bought for one region will not apply to an account registered in another, and that is checked at redemption rather than at purchase.

The account region is set when the account is created and is not something the recipient can switch to match a code afterwards. This is the single most common reason a Twitch code fails, so it is worth confirming before buying rather than after.

Choosing a value

Subscriptions are recurring, Bits are not

A tier 1 sub renews monthly. If the intent is to keep somebody subscribed for a while, the balance needs to cover more than one month or it simply lapses.

Bits are spent in small amounts

Cheering happens in the moment and in small increments, so a smaller balance lasts a long time and does not need topping up often.

Gifting subs consumes balance quickly

Gifting a run of subs to a channel is the fastest way to spend a balance. Larger denominations exist for exactly this.

Redeeming on the right account

Credit is applied to whichever account is signed in when the code is entered, and it cannot be moved afterwards. On a shared machine, check which account is active first.

Balance does not expire once applied and does not start a subscription by itself. It sits on the account until it is spent.
